This story bridges the gap between the movies with scenes that almost certainly didn't happen, but if they did, it'd explain a lot. Specifically why Moana's reunion with Maui felt so awkward over at Matangi's lair.
One scene takes place after the first movie, one after the second movie, and a third wish-upon-the-star of what happened next.
Is there a 3000 years age difference between them? Yes, but that doesn't count when it's Dwayne Johnson.

There were many theories on what would happen if one did not heed this advice, though no one could explain its origin clearly. Well, no one except Filemu, but he had long sworn to take the memory of that particular night to his grave.
