“Just breathe here for a moment, ta’ecelle." Essek had Caleb's bent leg resting in his lap, and he simply laid the deep maroon rope across his ankle. He sat and listened to Caleb breathe, trailing absent fingers up and down his solid thighs.
He reached down to hold Caleb's chin in his hand, to gently tilt his face up to look at his eyes. He'd become something of an expert in those eyes, in the shine of tears and the cloudy haze they took on when Caleb went away. He saw them clear and piercing if ringed with dark circles and flickering with anxiety.
