“That feels warm,” Hua Cheng said, eye wide. Xie Lian looked up, lips pursed around the tip of the ring. He opened his mouth to speak, dropping it, and Hua Cheng shivered at the sudden chill that washed over him.
“The mud?” Xie Lian asks, raising a brow.
“My ashes,” Hua Cheng clarifies.
Hua Cheng can feel it when Xie Lian touches his ashes. They take the sensations to their bedroom.

Madeleine, acting as if this is completely normal for them, continued to chatter on. Espresso refrained from outwardly reacting, because if one of them is going to be stupid and embarrassing about holding hands, it's going be Madeleine.
His hand is warm, was the only thing Espresso let himself think about. He feared to indulge any farther for what horrific things it could uncover.
Madeleine develops a very curious habit of holding Espresso's hand. Espresso is confused.

This isn’t it, Hua Cheng thinks.
He curls into Xie Lian just a bit more, seeking out a new kind of comfort from the hug now. Xie Lian easily offers it by gently combing his fingers through the ends of Hua Cheng’s hair.
It’s not the same. He doesn’t feel the box of comfort his mother always placed him in when she hugged him. Doesn’t feel the weighted blanket of a mother’s love that presses down on his shoulders and swaddles his heart.
“What’s wrong?” Xie Lian asks gently.

Madeleine cut him off, smiling sadly. “I had a feeling it was bad. I just wasn't sure how bad.”
Espresso sat in stunned silence, processing the unexpected confession. After a moment, he slumped forward with a weak grin. “It’s… hardly edible.”
