Eiji awoke with a pained sigh, taking several minutes — in which Ash remained quietly alert — just to squint his eyes open, and several more to become aware of his surroundings. Eiji's eyes, that once sparkled brightly, had become a dull, dark brown, whether from the constant pain of staying awake or the virus itself destroying his body. His body, too, trembled in his wakefulness, rattled by the flaring pain coursing through his nerves.
And even still, Eiji found a way to smile so naturally. "...Ash."

Summary
Bones has wanted to ride the Duquesne Incline for years, and the guys are finally on a road trip to make it happen. All are excited for a much-needed trip out of the house, packing since early morning. Sure, Ash botched up leaving ahead of traffic with his sleep schedule, and, yeah, the Magic 8 Ball they use to pick drivers and navigators causes Eiji anxiety every trip.
But what's a road trip without it's wacky, fun time memories?
That is, until Ash and Eiji start to use the trip to blur boundaries on where their relationship stands with one another.

However, Eiji would not have it any other way and finds spending time with his wild group of housemates the most fun he has had in a long time. The only thing is, his roommate Ash is not an early riser like the rest of them and every morning everyone walks on egg shells to keep him asleep. But, then there is Shorter, who could care less about waking the morning demon, and poor Eiji who always seems to have to put the fire out before it can consume the house and everyone in it.

Ash watched Eiji's chest rise and fall rhythmically as he slept soundly. A piece of hair covered one of his eyes and he looked so soft and adorable it should've been a crime. He ran a hand through Eiji's hair and then shifted closer so that his forehead was pressed against his chest. Sometimes it didn't feel real. He wrapped an arm around his boyfriend's waist. This was real.

Ash shakes his head, quiet. His chest is heavy, but he can't explain why. Guilt, maybe. Shame. A desire to be normal and to want something that it looks like everyone wants and is supposed to want. To not be able to give Shorter that.
