Joel takes a few steps back before he offers his hand. Ellie cocks her brow, skeptical, but he doubles down, wiggling his fingers in enticement. “C’mon girl. Humor me. I ain’t gettin’ any younger.”
Their fallout is pretty standard knowledge in Jackson and Ellie likes being gossip fodder just about as much as he does. But in the end, she gives in with a sigh and takes his hand, letting him lead her out to the dance floor. “Fine. But only because I haven’t earned my assisting the elderly badge.”
“Baby,” He chuffs out a laugh, “They’d kick you out the Girl Scouts before you could say Thin Mints.”

In another universe, Ellie tries to mend her fallout with Joel by giving him a choice: take her to the rumored firefly hospital in Alaska, or stay behind and keep her girl safe.

Summary
Joel decides to go back to Bill and Frank's. They have food, water, guns. Safety. He decides to let Ellie join him, if she wants to.
She does.
They still run into a lot of trouble, gain a bunch of trauma. (And become closer.)
It's basically the same thing as in the game/show but with less Fireflies, and they are going to Bill and Frank's instead of the Fireflies.

Summary
The flutter of hope that she had left unscathed died quickly upon hearing them, even more so after cataloguing the state of the girl. In pieces is the only apt way to describe it.
But whatever string of hope that could’ve been left dwindling in his soul was ceremoniously ripped out when the desperation in Ellie's eyes and gasps for air from her mouth left him looking at the bloody, Jagged, fleshy hole in her mouth where her tongue was supposed to be.
Or: When Ellie gets captured by David’s group, they change her in a way Joel can’t fix, no matter how hard he tries.

Summary
All at once, Ellie feels 8, and 10, and 12, and 14 again. She feels all the fragments of herself morph into one, she sheds the tears she never let herself shed. She says the words, the mumbled eulogies she never got to speak aloud. She lays to rest the bodies of the people who she loves most. And it still doesn’t feel like enough.
But she doesn’t know what will be.
And that only makes her cry more.
