“I know she does.” Elora let out a sigh— soft, but loud enough to carry. “But she isn’t… I don’t know how many new mothers you’ve seen, but this isn’t just her adjusting.”
The words slithered under Mel’s skin, digging deeper and deeper still. She wanted to claw them out— she wanted to scream. A whimper rose in her throat instead, and she even choked that back, reducing it to a garbled, pathetic gasp that made her humiliation burn hotter.
“What do you propose that we do, then?” Viktor asked.
Mel had the same question, herself.

She likes watching any kind of fire.”
“I’ve noticed. It’s concerning.” For as dry as his tone might have been, he still managed a smile when he looked at their daughter.

Summary
Mel’s eyes sweep over her breakfast with feigned surprise and genuine appreciation. Strawberry jam spread over a thin pancake in the shape of a heart, toast with the crust cut off, two fried eggs, and a steaming cup of tea.
“It’s perfect,” she says with a shaking voice and a wavering smile, and reaches out to pull the tray closer. “Thank you.”
Her husband’s cooking has improved considerably, something that she credits him for with a quick kiss. Chaste as it may be, it still prompts a loud gagging sound from Celia.

Celia nodded with all the solemnity Viktor would expect from a young scholar— but she did look bored. He took pity on her and cleared his throat.
