Summary
It was his years of experience that guests never talked to the servants. Perhaps they’d offer a word or two in a rare show of politeness, or gratitude, or assuaging their own personal feelings at being so above another human (or, in Thomas’ case, part-human). People who sat comfortably at the top of humanity’s power did not deign to mix with those so below them, much in the same way Thomas would not attempt to hold a conversation with a horse. One might talk at a lower being, but it was odd to attempt to talk to them.
Commander Crozier did not seem to agree.
