For years, he’s had the same routine. For years, he’d only have to wake up and there’d be lips pressed against his cheek, a raspy happy birthday whispered against his skin. He’d wonder, sometimes, how Harry could pinpoint the exact moment he’d woken up, because some years he hadn’t even been able to open his eyes before those lips made contact with his skin. He’d deduced that it must mean that Harry had been awake before him, every year without fail, and had been watching him. Had known him well enough to know when Louis slipped back into consciousness. It’d made him feel warm and safe and known, once upon a time.
This year there aren’t any lips pressed to his cheek. There isn’t a raspy happy birthday whispered against his skin.
This year, Louis wakes up alone.
2016
"Hi,” the boy chirps, and Louis sort of wants to scowl, mostly because he doesn’t.
“Hi,” he echoes, lower in pitch but not unfriendly, and the boy’s smile brightens in response.
“Hi,” he says again. “I’m Harry. I moved into the apartment next to yours a couple of weeks ago,” he points over his shoulder. “28B. I um. I thought I’d introduce myself.”

But he can feel the hairs raise on the back of his neck whenever he turns away from the painting nonetheless.

The doorbell rings and Harry’s heart leaps in his throat. It’s not like he wasn’t waiting for exactly this to happen - like he hadn’t been suffering from the paralysis that came with waiting for a future event, no matter how far back it was in the day - but somehow, between watching the minute hand of the clock move towards the twelve and the hour hand finally settling firmly on the two, he’d still managed to be surprised.
He’s nervous, wiping his hands on his jeans as he walks on suddenly unsteady legs towards the door. Never invite strangers to your house, rings through his head in his nan’s voice, but the thing is, Harry doesn’t know what else to do.
Of course there’s other options. There should be other options, at least. But he’s tried them all. He’s tried going to the library to study, but somehow it’d been too quiet. He’d tried music, but that was too loud. He’d tried the pomodoro technique and he’d tried body doubling, but none of it had helped.
Hence, Louis.

His ears are ringing as he slowly shuffles through the hallway, head bowed and the hood of his sweatshirt all but pulled over his face. There's a quiet but insistent headache pulsing at his temples and he breathes in shakily before knocking just once on the nondescript hotel door that currently feels like it's potentially going to save his life.
He stumbles across the threshold the moment the door opens, and Zayn’s arms are there to catch him, wrapping around him in a hug that makes him feel as though he’s finally able to breathe.
And this. They didn’t used to do this. They didn’t hug. They weren’t the kind of friends that were comfortable like that. Hell, a few weeks ago they weren’t friends at all. And even right now, he’s not sure what they are.
He just knows that Zayn wraps his arms around him and the ringing stops. Oscar could cry.
