Soulmarks came too easily to Buck.
Maddie used to say it was because his heart was too big, too whole. That it just meant he loved too easily, so it wasn’t a bad thing.
But every time a new soulmark would appear as a faded scar across his skin, he knew it was.
Because soulmarks only appeared black if the person you loved, loved you back.

Every time you fall in love with someone, you gain a soulmark for that person. After years of Buck only getting faded scar-like marks, he was ready to give up hope that one day he would fall in love with someone who loved him back.
And then Eddie Diaz walked into his life.
But Buck didn’t quite trust it yet, so it was up to Eddie to show him that it was, in fact, very real.

But he had to keep going, couldn’t just stop existing because he had a broken heart. Because the guy he was in love with ignored him like the plague. Gotta fake it til you make it, or something like that, no matter how miserable he is.
So he hid it, didn’t let anyone know how truely miserable he was. He handled his shit, because Buck was tough. He was always a tough kid, always pushing his sorrow and pain away, hid his hurt because he didn’t want to be a burden. Pushed it down and away until it was almost non existent. Because he thought he deserved it anyway.
He needed to pretend. So he smiled and worked and did what he could, and did it well, hit all his marks, grinning the whole time as if he was happy, as if he was winning, but it didn’t stop the gaping hollowness of nothing that appeared in his chest and swallowed him whole.

Neil was seven the first time he felt it. He was used to pain, accustomed to it by this stage, the feeling of a weight pushing him down and down, suffocating him, his arms and chest and head too heavy, his flesh and bones burning and ripping and scarring. Pain was something he knew all too well. But the pressure he felt deep in his gut and down in between his legs was something that he was too young to even understand, let alone comprehend feeling. And it hurt and ached in a way that he never did before, in a way that left him sobbing quietly into his pillow as his body shook from the pain, his heart aching in his chest equally as bad.
It was a strange feeling for him, pain being unusual, something he couldn’t understand. For Neil had known pain his whole life. But this, this was something else, something too harsh and deep and heavy, something he wished he would never feel again.

Neil and Andrew are soulmates, who can feel each others pain and reside in the back of each others minds, no matter how hard they wish that they didn't.

He could hear Robin in the back of his mind as he stood, watching Eddie make his way towards the front of the house, make it more obvious, be creative, think of something.
So he wrapped his hand around the back of Eddie’s neck and slowly lent in, never breaking eye contact. Eddie’s eyes widened slightly, his breath hitched, but he didn’t pull away, so Steve closed the gap.
