“Listen,” Eddie says, voice low. He steps closer, until his bare toes align with the edge of a tile. Richie swallows. Blinks. Looks back up. “I don’t mind.”
For a moment, Richie can’t possibly fathom what he means. Doesn’t mind what? Doesn’t mind that there’s a picture of him kissing the weird man who he killed a clown with at the top of everybody’s trending page? Doesn’t mind the word boyfriend tossed at him like it’s something that could possibly fit?
“What,” Richie rasps, throat dry, words toneless.
It would be funny, the way Eddie’s looking at him, if Richie weren’t so damn terrified. “Like, I’ll do it,” Eddie says. There is acute discomfort radiating off of all his sharp points. “Be your boyfriend or whatever.”

It’s still dark outside and Eddie taps nervously on the back of his phone. Richie answers with a sleepy inhale and says, “I bet it’s the Sonoran that you’re haunting.”
His voice is thick and tired and Eddie feels dizzy, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Richie makes a breathy noise that’s probably supposed to be a laugh, “I dreamt about you last night. We were kids again but you were still on the road, and you sent me a post card from every place you stopped in.”
“That’s the version of me you knew the most.” Eddie tells him.
“No. There’s only one Eddie.” Richie sounds like he’s falling asleep again. “I know you.”

Summary
Eddie opened his eyes finally; the bright light was jarring and sent a stabbing pain straight through his skull. He grimaced, squinting his eyes closed as he adjusted to the daylight streaming through the trees. Part of him had expected it to be dark, but he wasn’t entirely sure why.
He must be laying on a rock, because there was a stabbing pain against the middle of his back, and the unpleasant pressure of the handle of his bike crammed against his chest.
Richie’s stupid face came into view next, his hair long and wild and thick glasses magnifying his eyes.

Summary
“The thing you said - the fantasy.”
Eddie goes very still and stops typing. He trains his eyes on his laptop screen.
“About me assaulting you,” Richie says, because if he can’t say it out loud then he definitely shouldn’t be contemplating it.
Eddie slams his laptop shut and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Rich,” he says, “I promise we don’t have to talk about it. I don’t want to make things weird.”
Richie watches Eddie for a moment. It’s a delicate line, he knows - if he spooks Eddie, it is liable to make things wildly fucking awkward for an extended period of time. But if he backs out now, lets it keep gnawing at the both of them until they’re raw and tense and ready to burst - well, Richie knows how those things turn out.
“We should talk about it,” Richie says. “You brought it up,” he says, when Eddie frowns at him. “And now I’m bringing it up. Communication.”
