Mike Wheeler was one of the most idiotic people he's ever met. Of course he couldn't recognize his own feelings for his best friend until he had to feel the dead weight of his cold body in the Abyss. Of course he didn't realize El was going to sacrifice herself for the world again. Of course Mike lost the two most important people of his life and was completely helpless to do anything.
Helpless. Mike was so helpless all the damn time.
But, just maybe... he didn't have to. Not this time.

“It’s just that when I see my wife laying in bed, I don’t want to leave.”
His students all awww in one voice as if they are the imaginary public of a sitcom. Mike feels himself blushing like an idiot.
When he starts to talk about it, he’s unable to stop thinking about it. He starts to daydream about the legs, the arms of his alleged wife wrapped around him. Them, together, in bed, under the covers.
He’s sure he looks stupid.
“Does Mrs. Wheeler get sad when you leave for work?”

Then, over his shoulder something caught his attention. The light in the back room flickered. Off - on - off - on - before buzzing and dying with a final sad pop. “Shit.” Steve cursed, standing upright, trash bag forgotten at his side as he squinted through the darkened glass doors like he could switch the bulbs back on with pure willpower alone. Another thing to fix before his folks came back.
Later, he’d blame the slight buzz of alcohol running warm through his system for why it took him so long to notice the figure reflected behind him in the glass.
