Eventually, someone in Uther's Camelot was going to decide the so-called "dog" was too clever for its own good. They'd take a long look and realise that "pet" fit the creature far less comfortably than "familiar", and Merlin's secret would be out.
Merlin finds a puppy in the woods. Against his better judgement, Arthur lets him keep it. In the end, that simple decision saves them all.

Summary
Merlin doesn’t do it again, at least not for a while. It was understandable, especially after Arthur reacted so drastically at his first attempt at closeness, but Arthur still couldn’t help but spend another few sleepless nights regretting his reaction.
Because he was the prince of Camelot, and if Merlin - irresponsible, reckless, sarcastic Merlin - wasn’t willing to touch him, then no one was.
So when the second time came - when Merlin, most likely without thinking (“when does he ever think?”), went in for a hug, Arthur hugged back.

Summary
Canon Era. Arthur is King. Merlin is Court Sorcerer. They don't hide but they don't explicitly announce it to the people.
Merlin had stopped drinking after the third round, he was admittedly a complete lightweight, and had stuck around for the company but mostly because Arthur had pulled the dark haired man onto his lap and had his stupidly strong arms wrapped around his waist to keep him there. It was the most unkingly action Merlin could remember Arthur ever making and if he was being honest, he loved it.
