Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

“Come on,” Comeau says. “Are we all just supposed to pretend it's normal that you’re still playing house with Ilya Rozanov?”
“Gil—” J.J. says, but Shane doesn’t want him to finish that sentence, to pull Comeau gently off the ledge he’s steering himself toward. Shane wants to push him, kicking and screaming, to make them say it to his fucking face. That after all this time, they still hate him for the heinous crime of falling in love.
“We’ve been married for two years,” Shane says. “I’m not sure that qualifies as playing house. I mean, it’s longer than you were with your first wife, isn’t it?”
Or: Shane reunites with his former teammates at J.J.'s bachelor party. He's finally ready to say (and maybe punch) his piece.

This can't happen. Shane can't have feelings for Rozanov. Where could that possibly lead? Nowhere good, surely. Rozanov is not someone he can have. Not beyond the occasional hookup. That is the line they have drawn, no matter how blurred it becomes in Shane’s mind when he is laying blissed-out next to him, so close he swears he can hear Rozanov’s heart pounding just as loud as his own.
No, it is casual. That’s what Rozanov wants. And if he senses that Shane wants anything else, anything more, he will end this. Shane is sure of it. He must find a way to be content with what he is given.
Let himself down easy, now, before this gets out of hand.
OR: After Shane almost sends the "we didn't even kiss text" in the Vegas elevator, he makes a decision to get his growing feelings for Ilya under control, once and for all. That decision includes a vow to not kiss Ilya the next time they meet up.

Shane nods fast and loose, the praise making the buzz beneath his skin grow more and more intense.
“Why don’t I get to call you puppy?” Shane gasps out after a few seconds, his lips and chin slick with his own spit and his voice hoarse from Rozanov’s hand on his vocal chords. Rozanov’s hand barely falters against his neck, but a low groan escapes his mouth.
“You– hah– you listen just as well as I do. I ask you to bend me over the couch and you– fuck, you just fucking did it. You’d do– do anything I asked, huh? You’re good for me too, puppy.”
