Arthur felt his heart racing in his chest. What was Merlin going to do? Was he going to fuck him? He wasn’t sure how he felt about that, especially in this position. It felt so detached, as if there was a wall between them preventing too much intimacy. He wouldn’t be able to see Merlin’s face. It would be like he was being fucked by a faceless man.

Once night fell, Arthur found himself waiting alone in his room for Merlin to arrive. He felt his frustration building the longer he was forced to wait. He imagined Merlin cuddling up with Rosemary on the bed. He imagined them kissing, how soft her lips must be. Much softer than his, he thought with a sigh. She was prettier than him, more delicate than him. Everything Merlin could want in a partner. She was all the things Arthur would never be. It was no wonder Merlin was enamored of her.
What if Merlin was tired of Arthur? Tired of his control when they were together? Maybe Merlin preferred someone who let him take the lead. Arthur could do that, a small part of him chimed in.

Oh. Did Merlin love him back?
It was just that Merlin had always seemed so unattainable, especially after the revelation about his magic. It felt ridiculous that someone with all the power in the world at their fingertips would inexplicably want Arthur. Anything that drew others to the prince - wealth, social standing, fame - were absolutely meaningless at Merlin’s feet when you considered the staggering raw magic power he possessed. That would mean that Merlin just wanted Arthur for himself and that was an absurd and humbling idea.

Merlin couldn’t find out about this. Not Arthur’s overwhelming feelings for him or this strange attraction to his spell work.
