"Trust me Kai, you're hot now," Rosie had encouraged him. She said that sort of thing a lot—that his growth spurt over the summer somehow changed who he was. Looking back, he had evened out much better. He's never been 'hot', but he was a little more proportional.
It hadn't felt like that at the time. Back then, he'd been convinced that his puberty was meaningless. It'd given him acne, and it hadn't made his baby fat go away.
"You don't have to lie," he told her, earnestly believing that she wasn't telling him the truth. To this day, he doesn't know if she was just being nice.
Regardless, she instructed him to, "Just show up on Halloween and let me work my magic, okay?"
Kai Monteago's first Halloween at Eden's Garden Academy brings back memories of a Halloween long past. As much as he tries to stay in the moment, he's haunted by the ghost of a friend that's long gone.
