The first time Adam speaks the words out loud, it’s under the cover of night. Their legs tangle beneath the sheets and softly, more than a whisper but barely, just barely, he breathes out a quiet, “I love you,” against the cusp of Ronan’s ear. His smile is unmistakable even though Ronan can’t see it; a lazy, satisfied stretch of his mouth, his look of genuine satisfaction with all of this.

Declan carried the half a dozen cinnamon buns into the kitchen. It was already sweltering even for a summer morning, and he was not particularly looking forward to sitting in an old church with no air conditioning. He set the box on the round kitchen table and looked at the surgery buns with disgust. Matthew had insisted on the way that they stop to grab cinnamon buns for breakfast before church. Declan however had already had his breakfast of antacids, so he would not be eating one.

Summary
The first time Ronan leans over and kisses him when he drops him off at St. Agnes after his late shift, Adam just stares at him wordlessly for a moment before he manages to find his voice and utter an awkward "Thanks" and fumbles to open the door and practically bolts up the stairs to his apartment. It takes a long while to school his heartbeat back to a moderately normal rate and to make his brain actually begin to absorb the line he's been reading over and over for the last fifteen minutes.
Or: Adam and Ronan slowly learn about casual affection that isn't casual at all.
