Whatever Carlos had to say, Alex didn't hear; the pain in his right side exploded, blossomed out like erupting fireworks, blazing against his skin and muscle. He curled inward; he would have fallen if it weren't for Carlos reaching out to steady him, holding him up by his shoulders. Alex gasped, the pain blinding, his vision scattered with dots and stars that flashed in and out of focus.
