    “Tim, you’ve got to wake up.”

    The air was so dry it hurt to inhale. Tim gasped against aching ribs as the edges of unconsciousness began to dissolve away. His right side was bathed in an inescapable scorching heat. An attempt to scoot away from it was aborted when it awoke a dozen sharp pains across his body, lit all at once. His breath hitched.

    “That’s it.” The grating at his sternum stopped. Instead, cool hands cupped his cheeks. “Come on, Tim. Wake up.”

    Dick is suddenly very awake. He bolts upright, staring at the dimly lit figure. “Tim?”

    “Hi, Dick,” Tim whispers. He isn’t in uniform for once, instead wearing a pair of sweats and a shirt that Dick recognizes as one of Bruce’s. Dick was wondering where that went.

    “Jesus, kid,” Dick exhales, an uncertain mixture of disbelief and bafflement. “What are you doing here?” Tim and Dick are still in a fight of sorts, or are they? Have they made up yet, or is the terrain still cracked? Dick wants so badly to ask, but just having Tim in the same room as him is already more than Dick could have hoped he’d get.

    “Can I kiss you,” Roy asked, all gentle and polite, and Dick couldn’t say anything. He couldn’t force his tongue to form words, he couldn’t make his lips move, he couldn’t use his throat. He had to say no. Didn’t he? He couldn’t let Roy kiss him, not when he knew it was wrong, not when he knew Roy would hate him for it later, not when it scared him so bad he couldn't breathe. Roy was just looking at him, waiting for an answer. Like it was simple. Dick felt like the universe was closing in on him.
