There was, in fact, nothing playing with her head.
Just as he said, she felt the weight of her katana suddenly appear in her hand. She looks at it then at him, confused she asks, even if she knew better than to trust a demon's answer. "What do you mean by that?"
"Isn't this your dream?" He shoots back.
TLDR: Shinobu is met with a demon Giyuu and is haunted by him—literally and figuratively.

Turning away from the stand, she makes a vow to herself to never, ever, touch a bow and arrow again. She's done with this game—it doesn't take very long for her promise to be broken though as a voice spins her back around to the stand.
"I never took you for the type to quit, Horikita."
His voice is like a bucket of ice-cold water dumped on her. After two years of radio silence, an insult is what he first says to her—an insult said with his irritatingly familiar detached voice—it makes her blood boil.

Tomioka Giyuu is cold. That is an undisputed fact.
But as she closes the school door entrance behind her she learns that there's another fact about him most probably will never come about to know—because there he stood, at the front of the school gates, so awfully still like a statue with how unfazed he is with the heavy rain—said fact is that right now, Tomioka Giyuu is cold (not in the usual way he is, but rather in a close-to-pneumonia type of way—probably not, but she assumes he's shivering).

TLDR: A 1st year Shinobu gives a graduating 3rd year Giyuu an umbrella.
