“You live in LA?” Stede asked, and Ed stiffened a bit next to him. Stede chuckled softly. “It’s a big place, Ed. Tonight’s just tonight.”
Ed was silent as they stepped into the elevator, and he let out a long breath once the doors slid shut on the two of them. “I like you,” he said, his eyes on Stede’s in the mirrored door. “It’s just…my life….”
Stede reached out and took his hand, giving it a light squeeze, then tugged until they were facing each other. “Tonight’s just tonight,” he said again, lifting his free hand to cup Ed’s cheek and letting his eyes drop to Ed’s mouth. “We can handle that.”
“Yeah,” Ed breathed. He leaned in and let his nose brush Stede’s, his breath a tease against Stede’s lips.

Summary
Zuko was probably more involved in the gossip around the palace than he had any right to be.
It’s not his fault, it’s really not. It’s just that sometimes he’s sitting in the kitchens (the best place to get the gossip) drinking tea and trying to relax for once, and some of the kitchen staff will start gossiping where he can still hear them. He doesn’t really try to listen in; it’s not his place and he won’t judge the staff based on whatever rumors are running around, but Spirits is it interesting. He tries not to listen too much, or get too invested in it though. Gossip is gossip after all, and rumors hardly ever turn out to be true.
But Zuko absolutely needs to know if Maya from the laundry room broke up with her piece of shit boyfriend.
Or, 5 times Zuko got invested in/meddled in palace gossip, and 1 time he was the subject of the gossip.

It’s not even Ed’s fault. It’s such an easy mistake, anyone could have made it. It’s all because he’s not from a state that has real dispensaries, so he’s used to buying from friends and making his own edibles. He’s not a fucking amateur when it comes to weed, alright? It’s just that all of these prepackaged edibles all look the fucking same when they’re from a store, and somehow you have to be sober enough to read the fine print on the packaging that says how many mils per package versus per edible and those are very different measurements when you’re looking at a three digit number.
At least Ed had stopped to read the packet one more time, a second (apparently) 100mg gummy halfway to his mouth.
“Fuck,” he mutters. “Shit. Damn fuck shit.”
Ed gets way too high and gets helped back down by a very nice stranger

If there was even a flicker of disappointment in Stede’s eyes when Ed gathered the courage to look at his face, it cleared just as quickly as it came, and Stede only paused for a short moment before answering with a soft, earnest smile, “No, Ed. That’s not a problem at all.”
Ed is asexual. Stede is incredibly understanding. Together, they realise why he gets it so well.

“Evening!” the slighter one calls out and pushes back his red hood. It’s a white man, smiling cheerfully, and the moonlight makes his hair shine. Ed’s not great at estimating a human’s age, but the man seems to be an adult in his forties. “I’m Stede, and this is my companion Oluwande. And with whom might I have the pleasure?”
Ed blinks, looking at Jim before looking up at the blond man on horseback. His companion swears at him but pushes back his hood as well. He’s wearing an orange hat and his skin is dark. He eyes Jim and Ed nervously, but he also keeps glancing at Stede. “Sorry, you’re asking us to introduce ourselves?” He and Jim are obviously wolves. Ed’s hair might be long and curly, but he knows his ears stick out just as Jim’s, and he’s made no effort to hide his tail. And humans might not have a wolf’s keen sight, but they must’ve noticed the yellow eyes.
“Yes.” Stede bats Oluwande’s hand away as the other man whispers something. “Olu, it’s only good manners! I lured them over for a reason!”
