Summary
“Enough,” Eadwulf says finally, and it’s muscle memory, it’s instinctive, that he reaches out. He’s a fool, and he’s thinking of Bren, and they’re alone, arcana making the room shiver with heat, chalk dust heavy in his nose.
Essek is not Bren. He side steps Eadwulf’s reach. moving to the opposite end of the room, hands raised defensively. His fingers are crooked with the somatic components for counter spell. The chalk cracks in two pieces in his grip in his free hand.
Wulf laughs; he can’t help it. “We are allies in this, yes? I’m not going to hurt you.”
Essek laughs too; it is the first time Wulf has heard it. It’s a harsh sound, scraping on a throat already raw from shouting. It’s beautiful. It fractures. It shatters. “I’d like to see you try.”

Ox laughs, hollow and strained, a ferocious echo of the boy he’d been when Robbie had stumbled into their pack the first time, so very long ago now. The boy Mark had chosen to follow when his whole world had been ripped away from him, again. “I’m going to kill Livingstone,” Ox says, and there’s alpha in his voice that makes Mark want to bare his throat but there’s that boy that he met in the diner too, desperate for connection, and Mark says to him, “I know. I know. I know.”

Astrid arches her back, deepening the kiss. She reaches behind her and catches at Beau’s shoulders, anchoring herself with too-sharp nails and blood. Beau bites her lip.
They pull apart with a gasp and a laugh, swallowing each other’s air.
Yasha wraps an arm around Beau’s neck, half head lock, half embrace. She kisses Beau’s bloody mouth.
“Now it’s a party!” Veth shouts.

It was that scar that had caused Wulf to falter, as he’d stood in the darkness, arm outstretched. Does Bren remember the rock Wulf had slammed into his skull, the air thick with smoke and freshly seared skin? Did he look into still water a decade later and catch sight of the scar left behind, only able to wonder about the hands that caused it?
“You didn’t kill me,” Caleb says.
There is a cavity forming at the centre of Wulf's chest, hollowing more and more with each day that passes in this new, unfamiliar after. “Did you expect me to?”
