There is no possible scenario where Takumi would survive this.
Not like this. Worn down over weeks of being stretched thin, struggling to adapt, pressured and battered on all sides. This weak, frantic, exhausted Takumi, holding the blade in between his trembling hands. Driven not by hatred, but something quieter. Smaller. Something so, so scared, so tired, so desperate for everything to go away.
Cheer up, Takumi. You never have to be alone now.
Eito was never wrong about that. But a sickening feeling settles in his stomach, sour like bile. A terrible realization, unfolding its petals to reveal an awful truth. When - not if, but when - Takumi breaks himself into pieces, collapsing in on himself like the core of a star that's run out of fuel...

The sixteenth time he watches her die, he has long since built the tolerance to sit through the whole episode (even the gorey pink part), and he knows the terrible crashing notes of Danganronpa’s “Der Flohwalzer” just like he knows her voice—every little wave of sound, from both broadcasts. But still when the collar clasps and pulls, he finds tears running from his eyes anyways, something he can accept might never go away. At the same time, even while biting the side of his tongue and pursing his lips in anguish, his mouth turns up into a smile for no reason at all.
It never gets less painful, but the pain gets less ruinous. It becomes bearable, acceptable, desirable, and even if it’s still pain, it’s something he can finally welcome. Now he seeks it out.

The weight gets to him, though. Kaede can see it in the hours he spends hunched over his desk, dark circles painted beneath his eyes. She can see it in the mess of his hair through countless times running his hands through it. She can see it in the meals Shuichi misses, even with Kaede’s persistent urging for him to take breaks and eat. Shuichi allows Kaede to fuss over him, sliding meals onto his desk and replacing his coffee mug with a glass of water, but his grey eyes are always drifting back to his case files even as he thanks her for worrying. That mind of his is brilliantly sharp, and impossible to pull away from a task once he’s set out on it.
Kaede really does love that. She loves him. And because she loves him it hurts to see Shuichi working himself so hard, but she doesn’t want to pressure him to quit either; not when it’s something this important to him.

Shuichi struggles with a particularly difficult case and Kaede takes care of him in her own way.
