It was only months before that he stood on the wing of the Flying Fortress, screaming on top of his lungs just because he could. Just because he was alive when so many others weren't. Curt stood there by him, silently watching him rage. As he stood below the wing, the air grew thick with damp, drowning everything else in the grayness.
Bucky let out the howl that's been scratching at his throat since he learned the news. The scream was broken, full of pain, rage and suffering as if he was a wounded animal. He felt like one. He also felt Curt by his side, Buck at his back. He felt Van Noy and Dickie, all those lost before. They came to him when he needed them. His throat closed up as his tears swelled in a never ending wave, threatening him with dehydeation. Bucky wanted to curl into a ball and just lie there in the cold, accept his defeat. He couldn't believe his worst nightmare came to life as he was the last one. The last man standing from the first lineup.
