“I do have a question for you,” Max said, blue eyes turning a little darker once more. He fixed his shirt, messing with the top button out of habit.“Shoot,” Charles answered.
“Why are we here? Are you celebrating something? Are we hanging out? What is this?” He said plainly, a very Dutch approach to a Monaguesque issue.
Ch. 2
“Before we… before this goes any further,” Charles said, his gaze intense. “I’m going to tell you exactly what I want. Every single thing. And I want you to say it back to me. In Dutch.”Max blinked, a slow blush creeping up his neck. “What? Why?”
“Because I want to hear it from you,” Charles murmured, his lips tracing the line of Max’s jaw. “I want to hear the words in your language. It will be… a lesson. For both of us.” He pulled back slightly, his eyes locking with Max’s. “Are you game, Schatje?”

Summary
He probably should’ve said something in the garage at their last Grand Prix together. Charles had caught up to him, a rare moment out of sight of their team and the cameras.
He knows it wasn’t fair to hold Charles to expectations - to hopes - that the Monegasque driver wasn’t even aware of. He hates to admit it to even himself, but he was hoping for… some kind of sign that what he felt wasn’t unwanted, unrequited. But Charles behaved exactly as he ever did. Gentle, open… friendly. Nothing more.
So Carlos tried to let go. Letting the distance in the off-season, in different garages, keep them apart. Responding to his texts where necessary, but doing his best to make it clear to him that he doesn’t need to send pity texts. Carlos is fine, just fine, without him. He has a contract, and if that’s with a midfield team and without Charles, then that’s just fine.
He tries to pretend he isn’t wearing Charles’ favourite colour.
