The onion isn’t holding her attention, though— her uterus is. It’s cramping horribly, twisting in her lower belly like a dull knife, and she’s struggling to push through it.

Audrey grabbed the bannister to stop herself from losing her footing as she found a Siegfried shaped obstruction on the stairs.
‘What are you doing there? Trying to leg me up?’ she asked, lifting the laundry basket up and over him so she didn’t hit him with it, intending to walk past and to the kitchen but when Siegfried didn’t respond she sighed, putting the basket on the floor before turning back and sitting on the step beside him. ‘Siegfried?’
The use of his first name caught his attention, though he was growing used to her saying it more these days. He looked at her questioningly, his expression confused. He must’ve been in deep thought. Though, with Siegfried, that wasn’t always a good thing. ‘What? Sorry. Miles away. Was I in your way?’
‘More under my feet than in the way, but no more than usual.'

And it seemed to help, even after he slid it a bit lower than was necessary. He wanted to present a united front, but also to confirm to Malcolm that his advances were unwelcome.
