Ed opened his eyes to gold. The sunlight coming in the window was a buttery yellow, bathing the bed in a gilded hue, bright curtains around them, and Stede's blond head resting on the pillow right before his eyes, the strands also illuminated by the sun into a shine. For a moment he felt breathless by it, suffused in golden warmth and bone-deep contentment.
His good mood took a nosedive that afternoon.
