Summary
Vi was the first person to see Jinx clearly. She saw her for what she was—something else hiding inside of a child’s skin. Not like a snake, shedding its skin, which implies thought, progression, but something formless, changing without growing, a fluid filling whatever space it can find. A tool—not multipurpose like a Swiss army knife, but multipurpose like a hammer. To a hammer, everything looks like—well.

“What?” Etho didn’t move from his spot at the foot of bed. “No, Joel—you can—you can just talk me through it a bit.”
“Sorry. It’s just a personal rule—I don’t do gay awakenings anymore.” Joel stepped into his pants. “Bad for my mental health.”
Etho cast about for something to say in response to that, and eventually landed on the simple, but true: “I’m not gay.”
“Oh, god,” Joel said.

“Breakfast,” Scott says, finally unearthing a rusted pot from the center of the pile. “You want eggs?”
“Over-easy,” Martyn says. Because his game is about to be over, quite easily—which is a joke that isn’t funny, even in his own head.
