For a second, getting in Sundown's face on the tarmac, it probably showed anyway. That he was already over the edge, clinging by his fingernails. That he needed something nobody was giving him. He hoped dimly for a minute that Sundown might shove him off, shove him off or even hit him. He wanted to be hit. He wanted to bleed.
It wasn't going to be as much as Goose had bled. But it would be something.
But Sundown didn't do it. He let Maverick walk away whole. Just like Viper, just like Charlie. Just like Carole. Just like the board of inquiry.

He gestured to his own face, the side of which was perfect and unbruised, unlike Mav's. He knew this from a long, wincing examination in the mirror that morning. But at least his eye was open and working now, and he could roll it at Ice, so small mercies.
"Did you bring the promised food? Because unless you want to eat a cactus dipped in beer sauce, you're shit out of luck otherwise."
"I'm a naval aviator, I'm always prepared." Ice lifted a duffel and a bag of groceries out of the trunk. "I'd ask for a hand with this, but first I need to recon the situation. Make sure you have two good ones left."
"Keep it up, asshole," Mav said, and turned his back to limp into the house in a completely dignified way.

Goose has been dead for thirty years when Iceman loses his second wingman to a surface-to-air missile on the tail-end of a mission he's responsible for: he's sent his family on a suicide mission to destroy a uranium enrichment facility in Russia's Far East.
This is the story of those thirty years in the middle.
(Or: Tom Kazansky rises through the ranks while trying to stay a good man. If he ever was one to begin with.)

Summary
This is the state of Zhou Zishu’s life, currently:
He, Wen Kexing, and Chengling are sitting down for dinner. Wen Kexing complains about being the only one who cooks, but he also asks what everyone thinks of his dishes. Chengling tries to hide how pleased he is when they push extra bowls of food towards him since he’s still growing.
Zhou Zishu is happy and he does not deserve it.
