“Lie down, you need to rest.”
Alhaitham does, obediently resting his head against the pillow. He tugs at their joined hands. “Kaveh. Stay with me?”
There’s something hollow making itself at home in Kaveh’s chest. Alhaitham is not in his right mind, but that doesn’t stop the thrill running up his spine at the words. “Of course.”
Having finished his project in the desert a few days earlier, Kaveh finds Alhaitham unconscious past the gates of Caravan Ribat.

Nahida takes a ribbon from the dresser and starts playing with it, slipping the material around her fingers to make shapes. "Mr Kaveh, I have another question."
He hums, judging his work with a critical eye. One of the braids sat higher than the other. That won't do. Kaveh unravels the first braid and starts over. "And that is?"
"If I asked, would you be my family?"
In which Kaveh and Nahida have a heart-to-heart before school. As it turns out, talking about your emotions works wonders.

“It's him,” Aglaea says without hesitation. Mydei’s impressed that she's so calm. He isn't. He is on the verge of homicide or something. He'd start a war rather than be here.
“What should we do with him?” Mydei speaks quietly, with great caution. It's not his regular voice, but Phainon is sleeping on his lap, and he's a child. It's madness.
OR: something happens, returning Phainon to his younger self; Mydei should take care of him (and learn some important truths about both of them).

There it is again, that casually spoken ‘we’.
Aventurine laughs weakly, plucking at a blue crayon. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, we will.”

"Mydei!" Phainon yelps as he flips himself back upright, except it comes out as “Awoo!” instead.
This is humiliating. Mydei is the absolute last person he’d ever want to see him in this weak little body. Phainon skitters backwards, trying to stay out of reach even as Mydei approaches the table.
“Hey, watch—” Mydei grabs at him.
“Awoo?!” SPLASH!
Phainon is underwater. He flails his limbs, trying to figure out how to swim with this unfamiliar body. Something tightens around his rib cage, and he thrashes harder.
As Phainon is lifted from the water, he gasps for breath and starts coughing up the liquid he got in his throat, all while kicking his little legs trying to get some kind of foothold. He finds himself pressed against something solid and warm.
“Shh, shh. It’s okay. Don’t be scared.” Wait, who’s saying that? Mydei? Surely Mydei can’t speak with such a gentle voice… or, even if he could, he wouldn’t in this situation. And what happened to “scared” not existing in the Kremnoan language?!
Phainon gets turned into a chimera. It leads him to learning more about Mydei.

A Zonai child wakes from their mandated stasis, confused when they don't find themselves in the same building as they went to sleep. In fact, they appeared to be outside, surrounded by lots of wilderness and unfamiliar trees and ruined walls.
Groggy, the child wanders the mists of the strange forest, calling out for their parents. Only strange bells and disembodied giggles seem to reply.Where were they? How will they get home?
