Waylon managed the ladies’ formal department at Murkoff’s; once a dazzling mecca of high-end labels and prohibitively expensive price tags, now down to half of the third floor and only then because of the space needed for bridal fittings and alterations. The fact that a guy like Waylon came to manage it was enough of an oddity to tip anyone off that the end was nigh, but according to him, he was actually one of the miraculous few who’d survived in the department, and not just because he grew up with three spoiled older sisters and knew how to talk to ladies who could spend $2,000 on a single dress.
Which is why he needed me.
