“So. Anniversary plans. What d’you fancy? Fine dining? Nah, you'd hate that. Fireworks on the school roof again? Or we could break into the cinema after hours, watch whatever rubbish they're showing."
Henry cracked one eye open. "Anniversary of what, exactly? The day you nicked my bike and crashed it into a hedge? Or the time we flooded the science lab?"
Ralph grinned, wide and unashamed. "You're being thick on purpose. Our third. Officially dating."
Henry sat up so fast his vision blurred. Grass clung to his hoodie as he twisted to stare at Ralph. "We are not dating. When did that happen? Who decided that?"
Ralph stayed lounging, utterly unbothered.
"Me. Mostly. But you went along with it. We've been a thing since Year Seven, unofficially, because you were too stubborn to admit you liked having me around. Then three years ago, Al's party, remember? That sixth-form prat kept trying to chat me up, buying me drinks, putting his hand on my arm. You stormed over, decked him, dragged me out by my collar, and spent the whole walk home ranting about how I was ‘idiot and no one else gets to flirt with you!’ Ring any bells?"

He ran to see his parents carrying a soft bundle of blankets.
“It’s a gift for me, mummy?” Henry said, imagining a race car.
Mum looked down at him and laughed softly, a laugh he was rarely permitted to hear.
She knelt down with the bundle, “Say hello to your brother, love.”
Brother?
Henry peered over the bundle to see a pink scrunched up face.
“It’s ugly.”
Dad laughed this time.
And henry smiled. Maybe it wasn’t so ugly if it was the reason why mum and dad smiled at him again.
