Summary
Summer 1995. Every year, Wilson Favre trades his home in suburban Texas for the salt marshes of Brittany, France, where he spends his days sketching birds and helping his grandfather harvest salt. But this summer, the quiet rhythm of the seaside is broken: a Hollywood hotel tycoon arrives with plans to build along the coastline, leaving the village uneasy. As the only fluent English speaker in town, Wilson is pulled into the commotion when he’s asked to help the businessman’s son, Brando, learn to sail.
Brando Anderson is everything Wilson isn’t: dashing, dazzling, the kind of boy everyone on the beach seems to orbit—be it giddy towngirls gazing from afar or sturdy surfers clamoring for his handshakes. Wilson, used to living on the margins, knows he shouldn’t hope for more. Yet, as the summer heatens, the boys grow closer, choosing to bask in each other’s blinding light—regardless of the possibly imminent sunburn.
