Gimli wasn't a child, so he shouldn't have to be forced to stay at home. What's a young, resolute dwarf to do? Apparently run away and sneak into the Battle of Five Armies.

    Thorin certainly has the look of a king, the poise of one and, sometimes, Bard will think of him when he has to pretend to be one too. He thinks of Thranduil as well, but there is an easiness to the elf that Bard is sure he’ll never be able to copy and it will be all the worse for even attempting it in the first place.

    But, in some aspects, Thorin seems as surprised by his new role as Bard."

    Or: post-battle of the five armies, Thorin and Bard enter a political match. Since there is nothing binding them, not even friendship, it is decided they will dine weekly for a year.
