It’s so obvious it hurts, understanding how readily Vi slides into being a caretaker, into holding her together, taking on Caitlyn’s pain and making it her own. Caitlyn should stop her, wants to stop her, from taking the pain, taking the responsibility, taking it all onto her strong shoulders and letting it simmer and boil and reduce down into more guilt weighing her down.

The trickle of shower water blended with the patter of rainfall that kept echoing around Cait's head as she replayed the conversation. Not that it was a conversation, really. More of a verbal knife through her heart. A heart that she didn't know had become helplessly bound to the idea that Vi was going to be a permanent addition to her life until that idea was brutally severed in the rain with the words, "forget me."

Unable to find Laudna, Imogen reflects on the ways that she has failed her before remembering what she does have to offer. Spoilers for Ep. 77/78.

It was a mistake, letting her go on her own. It was such a stupid thing to do, such a selfish thing to do. Lauda had seemed to know what she needed, and Imogen was distracted by her anger at Ashton and the tension among the rest of the Hells, caught up in the ridiculous thought that she could somehow be useful in the fallout while everyone got themselves together.
She should’ve known that Laudna needed someone with her, that she would’ve been hesitant to ask anyone, especially Imogen, to come with her if she thought she was at risk of losing control. She would’ve realized, if she’d thought about it for more than a second. But she didn’t. She chose to let Laudna go and to turn her focus back to Ashton and the rest of that fuckery.
It was a mistake, and Laudna paid for it.
Laudna was always paying for other people’s mistakes. For Imogen’s mistakes.

Summary
Imogen can't sleep and finds herself thinking about the Raito charm and her own convictions. Well, one conviction, related to the woman who's humming and sewing in the bedroll next to her.

The needle moves rhythmically back and forth through the fabric, the soft swish swish pleasant and familiar. Laudna’s elbow occasionally brushes Imogen’s arm and their legs are pressed tightly together, a little mismatched with the height difference and Laudna’s position, and a reminder that she’s here. Close.
She hums lowly under her breath, something she’d always done but that Imogen appreciates especially now that she wears the circlet. Tonight it’s upbeat, Laudna’s finger tapping her small hoop where the song calls for percussion.
The tempo is disarmingly cheery but she knows the lyrics Laudna’s not singing: the lament of a man whose spouse was lost at sea. Verses of mourning and missed chances, a list of all the things they’d left behind.
As Laudna taps twice agains the hoop, her mind turns to Iffodola and the Raito charm. Their convictions and their fate in that cave.

It’s loving and soft, because of course it is, because it’s Laudna, but it’s also…she’s doing that thing she does sometimes, where she acts like Imogen doesn’t know what she wants. Like Imogen is too young and too naive to understand. The same tone she used in the basement.
Promise me.
As if Laudna wouldn’t burn the world down for her. As if they don’t both know it.
It’s not the first time she’s dealt with this bullshit. Laudna gets to be passionate and protective and fierce in her love (I would murder everyone around us if anything happened to you) but Imogen is supposed to pretend like Laudna’s life is worth less to her, to the world. Supposed to somehow just…let Laudna go. Because what? She’s a little bit dead? A little bit different? Imogen leveled a city block without conscious thought and nobody’s trying to put her down like a rabid dog, so why does everybody act like that bitch Delilah makes Laudna’s life irrelevant? Why does Laudna act like her life doesn’t…like Imogen should just be able to…

She wants Imogen there; she wants Imogen’s boots by the door, Imogen’s loose hairs trod into all the carpets. She wants carpets. She doesn’t want Imogen’s feet to get cold.
But this isn’t that world. Instead they are here, and Imogen is General Temult, and the gods are picked-clean bones, and the only person Laudna loves is on this side of the door, and everyone else is outside.
