Will’s eyes are still fixed on the broken bulb. Mike senses his apprehension, and he pokes a finger to Will’s cheek. “Come on,” he drones, turning Will’s head to face him, “it’s cute!”
“It’s embarrassing,” Will groans, head plunging to Mike’s shoulder.
And — okay. Maybe it’s a little embarrassing, sure, having to explain to the Melvald’s guy why he needs a new light bulb every two and a half weeks, but Will Byers, Mike’s boyfriend — Mike’s boyfriend! — has superpowers, and that's a marvel in and of itself.
Mike never thought that dating Will Byers would result in this many blown fuses.

“Mike.”
His name is spoken softly into the closet’s stale air, and it’s like Mike’s entire body was dunked into a vat of freezing water. His gaze snaps to Will’s face, unable to bear avoiding it any longer and—
Teary chasms of green are staring back at him, watery and vibrant and so Will that Mike has to choke back the sob of relief welling in his throat– because it’s not. It can’t be him. It’s impossible.
But then Will’s crying, and he’s falling back into his chair half-limp, like the reprieve of being himself again has sapped all the strength from his body. His voice trembles as he whispers, “God, Mike. I’m so sorry.”

"Oh god, oh god, we've gotta get you to the hospital,” Mike panics. He pulls away and studies Will for a moment before barreling on. “Holy shit, one second you were just standing there and the next your eyes were rolling back and you were unconscious for a whole seven seconds-”
Maybe Will really did bite the dust in the Abyss and this is the afterlife. He knows where they say boys like him end up after death.
But if hell was a baby-faced Mike Wheeler, still looking at him like he'd hung the stars, then maybe an eternity here wouldn't be so long.
In which Will's connection to the hive mind has consequences in the final battle, sending him back in time to November 6th 1983.
It's just like Back to the Future, if Marty McFly was a twelve–year–old with a bowl cut trying to save the world instead of his parents' marriage.
