Summary
Lost in a twisted replica of his hometown and beset by monsters and strangling vines at every turn, Will is running out of hope for survival when unexpected help arrives in the form of Mike the Brave: an armor-clad, sword-wielding squire from another universe. But what seemed at first like a miracle proves nothing but trouble, as it turns out that two twelve-year-old boys stranded in a dangerous wasteland with no way home isn’t materially better than one. Though each is initially unsure just how much he can trust the other, they have no choice but to work together if they want to return to their respective homes, and to the versions of each other that wait for them there.

“Well, we don’t—we—hold on!” Mike spluttered. He gestured between the two of them. “We are not doing anything,” he said. “You are going home, and then I am slaying the beast.”
“Well that’s stupid,” Will said, leaning back in his chair. “Why do I have to leave before you slay it? Isn’t that something I could help with?”
“You have no training! You can’t use magic!”
Will gestured at his backpack. “I’ve got a gun.”
