He was just a boy from Cuba. He wasn't a pilot prodigy like Keith, a genius like Pidge, an incredibly smart engineer like Hunk or even well-rounded and good as Shiro. He always had to work harder to reach his goals and to mantain his place. He worked hard at being fluent in English, he worked hard to be the best swimmer in his school, he worked hard at being a good pilot, he worked hard for every grade he ever had.
So, he thinks it's understandable that he can't believe this is happening to him.
