Summary
The person who saved Romeo doesn't turn around. He clicks his blades together into one, and hefts the sword over his shoulder. Like scissors, Romeo thinks absentmindedly. A mop of curly brown hair covers part of his face as he turns his head. And Romeo knows he's being stupid, knows that people don't just come back from the dead, but-
"Carlo?" he asks.
---
In which Carlo doesn't die, Romeo finds him, and everything follows from there.

Summary
The rest of the King of Puppets falls away, piece by piece, leaving a discarded puppet suit and a single figure in the middle. Carlo would know his face anywhere; it’s the same one he’s fought through puppets and trudged across streets barricaded with corpses to find. Romeo, not breathing but alive, animated by Ergo and wiping oil off one metal-plated arm, and still the best thing Carlo’s ever seen.
Carlo doesn’t say any of that. Instead, he grumbles, “I can’t believe you got taller.”
---
In which Carlo comes back looking for someone.

Summary
Something shifts in Romeo’s expression, small enough that Carlo might not notice if he were any farther away. He keeps tapping out the song’s rhythms, but he hesitates this time around. Romeo doesn’t act like this normally. Most of the time, he’s not the one who has to be dragged out of his own thoughts. But Carlo’s used to the way Romeo does it.
He usually starts with a question.
“Do you know how to dance?”
---
In which Carlo and Romeo share one dance, and then another.

Summary
“You don’t remember me?” Romeo murmurs.
Not-Carlo’s expression morphs ever so slightly from that passive gaze to something a tad more… remorseful. “I know who you are. I know who Carlo is, what he means to you.” Not-Carlo bites at his bottom lip, still refusing to meet Romeo’s gaze. “But I’m not him.” Then, almost as an afterthought: “I’m sorry.”
The storm ends, and the world persists. Romeo, brought to Hotel Krat and fixed up, vows not to rest until Carlo remembers him once again.
Unfortunately, things are rarely as cut and dried as he would like them to be.
