Sadie frowned. “Yeah, but if you do kill me, you can just take it back. So… not exactly reassuring.”
Bucky let out a soft, exasperated laugh. “If I wanted to kill you, you’d already be dead.”
His voice was still gentle, still calm – but the words hit like ice water. Her eyes widened.
“What the fuck?!” she shrieked, hurling the branch at him. It bounced off his chest with a pathetic thunk and dropped uselessly to the ground.
He chuckled – genuinely this time. Warm. A little sheepish.
“Okay, yeah. That was… not the best phrasing,” he admitted. “I’m just trying to say you’re safe. I’m not gonna hurt you.”
Her panic gave way to irritation, arms crossing tightly over her chest.
“Seriously? That was like the least comforting thing you could have said.”
“But you haven’t run away,” he pointed out. “So at least part of you believes me.”
Sadie gave a reluctant snort and shook her head. “Can I trust you to stop saying murdery things for the rest of the night?”
“Scout’s honor.”
