It was supposed to finally end. Ladybug would call her Lucky Charm after incapacitating Monarch—and together, they’d imprison him for life, he’d finally know her true name, tell her he loved her, and they would finally reach their long-overdue happy ending.
It was not supposed to end with Ladybug, detransformed, telling him with her final breath who she was and that she loved him as both Chat Noir and Adrien Agreste. It was not supposed to end with Monarch telling him he was his father, that he was a Sentimonster, and that he was so, so, sorry before he succumbed to his wounds and died. It was not supposed to end with him all alone all over again, a single breathing body in a room full of corpses.
And surely, it was not supposed to end with the Peacock Miraculous in his grieving hands, kwamis silently watching as a purple fog demisted to reveal bright blue eyes looking unblinkingly at him, without scar or bruise or mask, where Marinette Dupain-Cheng stood stock-still and waited for his first command.
On grief, and how death lingers long after the body is gone.

An alternate universe where Ladybug is not guardian and our main duo are the only superheroes of Paris. Also, they are eighteen and in their final year of highschool, just because it fits their personalities better.
