“Not according to the Company, I don’t.” Aventurine smiles and takes off his sunglasses. He reaches over and goes in for the kill, lifting the bottom of Ratio’s chin to meet his eyes. No one ever resists the eyes. “You have no idea how special you are—in that I was sent to retrieve you.”
Ratio says nothing. He doesn’t really move.
In which the IPC just can’t seem to convince Veritas Ratio to join the Intelligentsia Guild, so they deploy Aventurine to a tiny university city-state, where he must charm the good doctor into their fold.

Summary
Aventurine makes it out of the abyss - and into a different world. Things are different here - simpler. There are no Aeons, no intergalactic factions and corporations, no Paths and Blessings. He is not naïve enough to assume that there is no cruelty and discrimination here - for there always is - but for the most part, everything is peaceful.
Here, Aventurine's priorities are getting people's coffee orders right. Fairly straight forward, if you ask him.
Except for the bit where he is surrounded by too many familiar faces, and they remind him of a place he can no longer return to. That's okay. People come and go, and so will they.
Except for the bit where they come and go and come back.
AKA. Aventurine gets dropped into a coffee-shop AU with all the memories from before. He's handling things until he's not handling things. That's okay, because he still has friends (and Dr Ratio) in this world. He just doesn't know it yet.

Despite himself, heat grows in Aventurine’s cheeks. “Well, I need something to do when I’m in transit.” The lie tastes funny on his lips. He moves on. “Does anyone else know you’ve got a soft heart under that head of stone?”
“I wouldn’t consider basic human kindness a soft heart,” retorts Ratio, still.
“Well, well. It seems I’ve struck a nerve.” For the first time in hours, Aventurine smiles.
After unexpectedly passing out, Aventurine finds himself in the safety of Ratio's room. Or, Aventurine allows himself just one nice thing after so many years of denying himself.

Bloody footsteps with no discernable source litter the ground, leading all the way to a small love couch in a corner. There's an indent in the seat cushion, and the backrest behind it, as if someone were sitting there, but there's no one to be found. Almost –

"Ratio," Aventurine begins slowly, cautiously in a way that makes Ratio feel even more weary, "I'd like you to meet my sister."
