The advertisement, which had run in a very selective paper only distributed to a small set of particular underground institutions in London, was wanting. James was certain of it. He should have made it longer, more detailed regarding exactly what sort of connection he was looking for. It had run in the paper for two and a half weeks now, and James was beginning to regret ever posting it at all.
After their return, after his recovery, after the court martial, James finds himself adrift. With Francis no longer speaking to him, no new posting, and nothing to occupy his time, he decides to take out an advertisment.

After all, it was found that a captain in the happy state of regularly satisfied matrimony was far more likely to be a capable sort of fellow, less distracted by a wandering eye, more diligent in his duties, slow to engage in harsh punishments that might encourage the ire of the men.
And so it was that every six months or so, the heads of the admiralty would get together, review their roles of captains who had not as yet found their better halves, and deign to remedy the situation

When Francis tried out for what he thought was Bake Off, he didn't expect to end up on a knock-off run by an aging baker desperate for a legacy. But now he's here, trying to keep up with the younger bakers and their flashy piping, avoid the eyes of cameras that only seem to catch him at his worst, and do his best not to be distracted by that posh bastard with the perfect hair.Ten weeks, twelve contestants, two hundred and twenty five bakes.

Summary
Aziraphale has read every book in his shop at least once. He has reread some of his favored volumes dozens of times, has memorized whole great swaths of them. If his own words are insufficient to convince Crowley of his sincerity, then perhaps the words of others can!
(He might have the decency to ask the books what they thought of this plan. The books had been watching the two of them for over a hundred years, and certainly had a great deal to say on the matter. But Aziraphale neglects to consult them, and thus will be very unprepared for what happens next.)
Back on earth, Aziraphale tries to apologize.
