As he sets out to find her, clinging desperately to the hope that they will be reunited, he begins to discover the mantle that was always meant for him to take up. T for violence. Doesn't strictly follow canon; I make my own tweaks here and there. Could be seen as a sequel to Rifts Between Us, but it doesn't have to be.
