Summary
Will Byers' self-sacrifice is coded into his DNA. He stayed behind in Hawkins, hoping to ease his family into his transition from teenager to adult, but now, this choice is slowly eating away at him.
Mike, meanwhile, is in California, finally feeling free to explore and question the box he'd put himself in his entire life. He realizes that he needs, and is allowed to demand, more from his life.
Slowly, he realizes that Will is trapped in their hometown. He needs someone to pull him out and show him that he won't thrive if he doesn't allow himself a bit of selfishness.

Summary
A sharp crack tears through the air. Mike flinches back, staring down at Will's lifeless body. He gets one last look before the ground is giving way beneath them, and all at once, they’re falling.
A shrill cry tears from Mike’s throat as he finds himself flailing through the open sky. A sharp crack of lightning shutters in the distance. Will's limp corpse contorts, dropping faster than he can. He’s screaming, unimaginable terror ripping through his body. He writhes, reaching for Will, crying the boy's name.
He’s falling, plummeting through a destabilized upside down and there's nothing he can do to stop it. He’s going to die.
Mike reaches out, eyes squeezed close. He tears the watch from Will's wrist, seconds before colliding with the Exotic Matter.

OR
Colliding with Exotic matter as the Upside Down collapses in on itself sends Mike hurtling through time. He’s given the chance to save Will before any of this starts.
But he can’t seem to get it right. Reliving moments throughout the years, helpless to warn Will. He just wants to keep him safe. Why can’t he keep him safe?
He’ll do this again and again until he gets it right. He won’t lose him again.

“Who… who tried to stop him?” Mike finally manages to ask, and he dares to look up at the strange girl. “Eleven, who tried to stop Henry?”
There’s a pause. Then, Eleven lifts her head, and she looks Mike directly in the eye. And Mike… Mike knows. Without her even saying a word, Mike knows.
Eleven points to the picture one more time—points to Will one more time. And with a voice full of conviction and full of truth, she whispers, “Will.”

“Wow,” Will breathes out, just on this edge of teasing. “You sound very confident about this.”
“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”
“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”
“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”
Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

Summary
This is the first girl who’s ever asked Mike out — something he had, in the not too distant past, been terrified would never happen. And Mike just stands there, feeling like his dining hall dinner is about to crawl back up his esophagus.
Jeremy, Saint Jeremy, nudges him with an elbow. “He’s kind of private about it, but Mike actually has someone back home.”
Mike turns his head to look at Jeremy, expecting a knowing smile or the hint of a wink. But Jeremy actually looks sincere, which makes Mike’s eyebrows sink down, almost to the top of his nose.
“Will, right?” Jeremy supplies, forever trying to be helpful. “He’s at CalArts?”

Mike barks a laugh. “I’m, unfortunately, requesting your companionship Thursday night to see Child’s Play 2 with Will and I.”
She sends him a look of bewilderment. “How did I get dragged into your date with Will?”
“Y’know, it’s really great that I can count on such discretion from you and Lucas. Super awesome that you don’t tell each other everything.” Max ignores him and he continues on. “Well, I tried my best, but he kind of looked at me all-dumbfounded and wasn’t saying anything, so I panicked.”
“Well, duh. He’s liked you since, like, birth. Did you even give him enough time to answer?”
“Of course I gave him enough time to answer.” Mike grits out, voice tight. “I know how to have a fucking conversation with someone, Maxine.”
Mike Wheeler can’t pick a major to save his life, is fighting for said life in the worst class ever (Astronomy 101), and is desperately trying to romance the best person in his life.
Enter: Will Byers, his advanced concepts in painting final project, and his pretty eyelashes.
