Melissa is frozen, can only stare at Barbara's focussed expression, can’t help but look at her lips— her beautifully painted, luscious red lips, and tries not to react to the feeling of Barbara's fingers ghosting over her face as she works her magic.
Barbara makes her nervous.
One evening, Barbara and Melissa reminisce on a deceptively ordinary day.

"She's back at Barbara's side in a couple of minutes and hands her a margarita with bright pink sugar on the rim. Some of the crystals cling to her dark wine lipstick, gemstones in velvet. Involuntarily, Melissa's tongue darts out to lick at her own lips, her mind wondering just how sweet it would taste if she were to lick Barbara's instead. But Barbara, whose eyes never stray too far from Melissa, seems to mirror her. She licks the sugar away and Melissa mourns the loss of the fantasy."
Or Melissa accepts Gary's wedding invitation but when Jacob convinces her that she needs to bring along a plus one, Barbara offers to accompany her. Away from Abbott life for an entire weekend in a romantic setting, and a hotel room with only one bed, tensions arise and culminate.
