“Alex,” Pierre said softly.
“Hmm?”
“I’ve never doubted your love for me.” Pierre’s voice had faded into a whisper. “And I’ve never doubted my love for you.”
“I know.” Alex knew. He knew that Pierre was only angry, and he had the right to be. It didn’t erase any of their feelings. Pierre hadn’t needed to say a thing, and Alex would have still understood.
Pierre began crying quietly into his shoulder, and Alex attempted to pull away, but Pierre refused to budge.
So Alex held him, he held Pierre and he let Pierre cry, and he let each sob, each shudder of Pierre’s body crash into him like a wave of sadness until he began to cry, too, at the unfairness of it all.
They stood in the middle of the floor, swaying side to side, crying in each other’s arms. They just let each other cry without a word. Neither of them tried consoling the other. Neither of them tried to stop the other. Neither of them tried to change a thing.
They were way beyond that now.

Summary
Charles just wished that things didn’t have to be so hard.
He wished he could be the nice Catholic girl that George had always wanted.
Charles had always thought, a little part of him had always thought, that maybe George really shouldn’t be loving him. Maybe he would be right to go along with the Church and reject Charles as his soulmate. Maybe Charles was just...wrong for him.
“Charles,” Pierre finally said. “You alright?”
The sound of his voice made Charles burst into tears again.
“He’s constantly fighting himself because of me,” he sobbed. “Pierre. I watched you do that for your entire life. I watched you fight yourself because of Alex. I know how it feels. How much it hurts. I’d never wish it on anyone else. But now I have to watch him do it. The love of my life.”

“Don’t lie to me.” Charles tipped Pierre’s chin so he could see the wound better. His touch was rougher now as he applied the yellow antiseptic, as if he was angry with Pierre and wasn’t going to care if it hurt him. “I’ve seen your shin pads. They’re three sizes too small. Pierre, you go home with bruises all over your shins. You go into every tackle as if you’re aiming for their boots to hit your ankles. Why are you doing this to yourself?”
“It’s the only way I can see myself.” Pierre hated that his voice was soft and weak. He hated that he was soft and weak. He hated that even though his voice was faint, it still bounced off the papered walls of the room and struck back at him, reminding him of the fact.
“How do you think your soulmate would feel? That you’re hurting yourself because of them?”
“I don’t care about my fucking soulmate,” Pierre spat.
“But you do, don't you?” Charles asked quietly. “You do. You care too much about them.”
“I don't.” Pierre did. He did. He just didn’t want to say it out loud, because it would mean he felt something besides anger.
