Honestly, Sojiro hadn’t looked too deep into Akira’s lack of a date for Valentine’s Day. Was it a bit surprising? Yeah, honestly, kind of. As much as Sojiro teased him, he always seemed to hit it off with everyone around him, even the ladies. Sojiro was an adult, which meant that he ended up spending a lot of time as a wise, passive observer off to the side of the kid’s whole friend group. Which also meant that he’d picked up on a lot of things that the kids probably hadn’t. One of those things mainly being the way that Akira’s female friends looked at him when they thought he wasn’t looking— or especially when he was.
He’d even attempted to make a couple insinuations about it throughout the year, but with Akira’s typical undecipherable expression, it was difficult to tell if Akira was deliberately deflecting about it or simply didn’t pick up on it at all. Either way, Sojiro sort of got the feeling that Akira just wasn’t all that interested in that stuff.
According to Futaba, though, he was tremendously mistaken. On multiple accounts.

Summary
“Akira,” Goro says calmly, and Akira finally finds the strength to meet his eyes.
It’s scary, but the world doesn’t end. His eyes are familiar, a comfort, and it scares him more how easily they soothe him, because no matter how hard he searches, he can’t find any concrete evidence on whether they’re real or not. Goro’s eyes are firm and genuine. In direct contrast, his calm demeanor radiates off of him where Akira knows his own terror must be pouring off in waves. Despite that, Akira can see his concern in the determined searching of his eyes, and the tension of his brows.
That Akira knows that if something was totally and utterly wrong with the world around him, that if Goro had come to the same conclusions that he had, he wouldn’t be looking at him like this, makes him want to trust it so bad. That, and the feeling that he owes it to him to say something, lets him overcome himself enough to speak.
“Is this…” he chokes on his words. He tries again, hands squeezing, “Are you real?”

Summary
He opts to avoid confrontation with it, shoving it down, down, and pretending it is not there. Pretending it is the him here and now alone who is sorry, and not also the boy trapped alone in the dark, with nothing but his own guilt and fear and mind-breaking pain.

Summary
Mitsuru takes care of Akihiko after his injury. As his condition grows worse, though, there’s only one person Mitsuru can ask for help.
Akihiko looks at Aragaki through glassy, half-lidded eyes. “Shinji?” he whispers. “You… actually came back…”
Aragaki looks away, all kinds of uncomfortable right now.
“He’s just visiting,” Mitsuru clarifies.
“Shinji,” Akihiko murmurs, “have you seen Miki? I don’t know where she is.”
Aragaki’s eyes go wide. Instead of answering, he whips around to face Mitsuru.
“The fuck’s he still doing in his room?” Aragaki snaps. “He should be in a goddamn hospital.”
