Aemma Arryn, wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, dies in childbirth mere months before Viserys’s father and heir to the throne, Prince Baelon, meets his own tragic fate. When Viserys is chosen as the next Prince of Dragonstone and too quickly becomes King of Westeros, he names his only child by Aemma, his daughter Rhaenyra, his heir. But in order to strengthen his line, he marries the Lady Alicent Hightower, daughter of his Hand, soon after his coronation. She quickly gives birth to a son, Aegon, but Viserys remains steadfast in his choice of heir. At Aegon’s second nameday celebration, Otto Hightower proposes a marriage to the King: Rhaenyra and Aegon. This proposal Viserys readily accepts.
Aegon Targaryen grows up married to his sister, both of them raised to one day rule the Seven Kingdoms together. As he gets older, he realizes the secrets she keeps from him, and the secrets he’s kept from himself. Namely: why has he always hated the idea of Aemond and Helaena’s betrothal?

Baelor is the first to break it. “Forgive me, brother. That was uncalled for.” His voice is soft, any trace of jest gone.
Maekar doesn't even glance at him, his eyes are fixed on the wall opposite. He doesn't have to. Hurt is written all over his features, no matter how hard he tries to hide behind a mask of indifference.
He gets up from the table, wincing when he pulls on the stitches in his side. “The day was tiring. I will retire now, with your permission, Your Grace.”
He doesn't wait for Baelor's answer, turns on his heel, and heads for the exit.
He's always been quick, so Baelor manages to catch up with him just as he's reaching for the handle.
