He thinks of Johnny and he chokes. Chokes on the sound of his laughter, on the never-ending fear in his eyes, on his greasy black hair, on his soft-spoken voice. He chokes on the ugly desperation for him. "Please, God, let me see him, just once more," he says, praying and begging that whatever and whoever hears, and listens.
They listened, but in a way Ponyboy felt was utterly cruel. Ponyboy could see Johnny again, he could hear his laughter and see his fearful eyes, but only in his dreams.
