Andy feels the bile rise in her throat and pushes it down, forcing herself into crisis management mode. There may not be an immediate threat but that doesn’t mean they’ll be safe indefinitely. There was a lot of gunfire. “Joe,” she says and then again, more forcefully when he doesn’t respond, “Joe!” He lifts his head but doesn’t look at her. “We won’t leave him, but we can’t stay here,” she says with as much compassion as she can while still leaving no room for argument. “We have to move out. Please, Joe.” She waits a beat. “Please.”
Joe slowly gets to his feet, automatically picking up his scimitar as he does. His eyes never leave Nicky’s face. Nicky’s eyes are wide open and staring. Andy leans down and gently closes them.

“What kind?” Booker says amiably, tossing a twig in the general vicinity of the flames.
Nile shouldn’t do it, not with how she gave herself the jitters earlier. Maybe that’s exactly why she says, immediately and unbidden, “Something scary.”

“Yusuf?” Nicky breathes, and the man fires a blast into his chest.
Nile winces - it’s gory, messy, he’ll be down for awhile - before his words catch up to her, and she whips her head around to stare at the man holding a gun on her family.
She does recognize him, she realizes with a sinking feeling. She thought she’d just hadn’t had a dream about him in awhile, but she never made the connection between a man going about his mundane business in a store with the screaming one trapped under the ocean that had been haunting her. She just thought he was a random face plucked from her memories.

Andy stops before Joe, meets his eyes and does not flinch.
“But don’t you dare not give this fight anything less than your all,” she says.
From beyond her shoulder is Nicky, his face blank, so far removed from the feral fighting thing Joe tangled swords with last night. His impassivity bites through the bone of Joe more than anything ever has, or ever will.
The lightning-bright blood of a kaiju is child’s play to the fight in his eyes and this, not the beasts from the electric deep, will be my undoing.
(Or the Pacific Rim AU no one asked for)

Well, the earth is giving itself to the sea, soil slowly eroding into the rising water, and Joe is giving himself to Nicky - everything is salt and silt and seafoam eyes, until the pleasure swallows him whole.
It is shirk, and Joe does not care. Not when Nicky is touching him, is turning him inside out with his touch, with his fingers opening him up. Every stroke pulls a gasp from his lips, shifting his hips up to get more.
